Yellow Front Door

One day I was bored and home with a sick child so I decided to paint the exterior doors the same color as the chicken coop — Egg Yolk yellow!  I started on the back door in case it went terribly wrong.  A yellow front door and side door would follow.  The doors were a brick red and I knew it would take several coats to cover it up.  Frist step is taping.  I didn’t take the hardware off but I wish I had.  I think it would have come out better but taping is okay.

Next step is primer.  I like Stix primer from for cabinets, doors and furniture.  When dry it still has a tacky feeling and the paint sticks to it better.  I always use Benjamin Moore paint but after trying 5 different yellows on the chicken coop I just couldn’t get the color right   Some were too gold, some too green, some too brown, some too orange.  Yellow is a tricky color!  I found a Martha Stewart paint chip called Egg Yolk that I loved.  I took the swatch to my hardware store and they scanned it and created a custom yellow for me in my beloved Ben Moore paint.

Here is how it looed after one coat.  It looked okay but you could still see the dark red a bit.  After the second coat it looked great!  So good that I decided to paint all the other exterior door in our home.  I love my yellow front door!
